Best Southwest Rock Art Sites On The Web

The webmaster's personal choices of the best websites devoted to rock art of the Southwest.

Arizona

Deer Valley Rock Art Center
The official site - every time I visit it, it's become even better than before.

Introduction to Grand Canyon Polychrome
Has some amazing photos of pictographs in a style that is not well-known. Back after a short absence.

Palatki - 6000 Years of Arizona Rock Art
This is my site, so I can't be objective. Pictures, site info, and how to visit.

 Shaw Butte Notes
A terrific site on the Shaw Butte archaeoastronomy site, including animated GIFs of events at the equinoxes and solstices. Unfortunately, the site was severely vandalized last year.

V-Bar-V Ranch Petroglyph Site: Heritage Of The Beaver Creek Sinagua
Another one of my websites. Pictures, interpretive text and visitation info for this world-class petroglyph site near Sedona, AZ (only 3 miles off I-17 exit 298).

California

BLM-CA Rock Art Tour
Great site - descriptions of all 24 California BLM rock art sites open to the public (most in Southern California, 4 in NE California). Temporarily unavailable.

Chumash Rock Art
William Hyder's site on his research into the Chumash Indians. Dig deep into this site, and you will find lots of articles, maps, pictures and site descriptions.

Trip To Mopah Mountains, Mojave Desert
Description of a college field trip to a site in the Mojave.

New Mexico

Petroglyphs & Rock Art - Los Lunas, Valencia County, New Mexico
Nice site, although navigation is a little unclear to begin with (use the arrows at upper right to go forward and back).

Utah

SURWEB
"The mission of SURWEB is to develop Internet Web Pages from resources of Utah, and foster the concept that
education is the utilization of information from worldwide resources." This they do a great job of. Listed below are the SURWEB pages that contain rock art.
           Buckhorn Wash
           Fremont State Park
           Newspaper Rock
           Nine Mile Canyon
           Parowan Gap
           Rochester Panel Rock Art

  42Gr532....A Rock Art E-'Zine
A first-rate "webzine", concentrating mainly on rock art of Utah, usually Barrier Canyon style. Even better now that articles from previous issues are online in the "Archives" section.

ZiNj: Dinosaurs, Fossils, Ancient People, & Other Really Old Stuff
Online version of Zinj magazine issue dealing with Utah rock art. Oriented towards kids, but a worthwhile read for anyone.

Utah Rock Art
Nice summary of rock art styles found in Utah.

BLM Moab Area Rock Art Auto Tour
Short but worthwhile; guide to sites near Moab.  Temporarily unavailable.

West Texas

Gateway Page - Rock Art Foundation
New home page for the Rock Art foundation, showcasing rock art from the Lower Pecos River area of West Texas.. A stunning site, both in content and presentation - go see for yourself!

Baja California

Cave Paintings of Baja California

Cave Paintings of Baja California
Two links to the same excellent Archaeology magazine article.

General Southwest

James Q. Jacobs ROCK ART Home Page
Large site with many excellent photos from throughout the SW, grouped by area and style; many sections have interpretive text.

Southwestern United States Native American Rock Art Gallery
Doak Heyser's page; sites from across the Southwest. Many excellent photos, most with interpretive info.

Rupestrian CyberServices Home Page
Professional rock art services, including mapping, multimedia, and digital enhancement. This site has some really-cool Quicktime VR panoramas.

Rock Art Acoustics
Text, pictures and sound files on a theory that rock art sites often are associated with unusual acoustic properties. Might explain why some sites have rock art, and adjacent sites that appear to be perfect choices for creating rock art are blank ....

Brian Lee's Rock Art Page
Should have put this site up on the "Best" list a long time ago. Many excellent pictures, primarily from Utah and Colorado.
